Plutarch: Greek Lives

Book Reviews, Greece

One of the important authors for a number of areas regarding the Jesus Myth is Plutarch. Among other writings, he wrote a series of lives of Greek and Roman figures.

Plutarch

There is a collection of these bound as the Greek Lives. In a way this is an artificial way of organizing them because Plutarch purposely paired each Greek figure with a Roman figure.

There are two ways in which this book is relevant to the aim of this website. Richard Burridge in his research identified the genre of the Gospels as Lives (Greek bioi) and Plutarch’s lives are some of our best examples of this genre.

The other way is that the final of the nine lives is that of Alexander the Great. Plutarch’s life of Alexander is one of our earliest biographies of him. Plutarch wrote this about four hundred years after Alexander’s death.

Historians use this account as a historical source and yet Mythicists want to reject the Gospels because they are 40-50 years after the events. There is definitely a double standard.

If you are interested in the New Testament and its literary context, I definitely recommend that you read the Greek Lives.
