I believe the starting point for responding to the Jesus Myth Theory is an understanding of both historical Jesus studies and ancient mythology. One tool for you may be Classical Mythology: A Very Short Introduction.

I like the Very Short Introduction series. I’ve read a number of them and look for them whenever I’m in a second hand store. They are a great way to get introduced to new subjects
You may or may not like this edition of the series. It depends on how much background you have in the subject of classical mythology.
The author spends a lot of time making connections between the modern world and the ancient world. It seems as if the goal is to create an interest in mythology and to demonstrate why it is relevant today.
That means those that want heavy details about mythology will be disappointed. The reader may wish that the author would get back to the ancient world.
Still, I thought it was an interesting read, even for someone with some background. The author is a talented writer and obviously knows her subject.
It definitely is a good book for someone with no background in classical mythology.
