“But That’s Not the Jesus Myth Theory I Believe in…”

When I share my thoughts on the Jesus Myth Theory, there is a certain response I get from some Mythicists. It goes something like this: “That’s not really the Jesus Myth Theory. Mythicists don’t really believe this. You need to read [author X].”

I appreciate those comments but I do need to clarify things. I do not try to straw man the Jesus Myth Theory. The JMT that I am responding to is not something easy to defeat that I have made up in my head. It is always based on really interactions I have had or articles I have read.

Having said that, I do not doubt that there are Mythicists with a more nuanced version of the JMT. There are a few, although not many, scholars who have done some actual research and are not just regurgitating some blog post they stumbled across.

Here is what we need to remember: There is not one monolithic version of Mythicism. While some of my posts may not be relevant to certain kinds of Mythicism, they are directly addressing other versions of Mythicism.

I am always open to addressing a specific scholar or author. But what I want people to know is that just because what I say does not describe you does not mean I am misrepresenting Mythicism.

Just as there different kinds of Christians, some more thoughtful than others, the same is true for Mythicists.
