Bart Ehrman is no friend of evangelical Christianity. In fact, I argue elsewhere that he is more dangerous than Richard Dawkins. While there is much that Ehrman says that I disagree with, there is one thing we strongly agree on:
Jesus did exist as a historical figure.
Ehrman is an agnostic New Testament scholar. He has been popular among atheists for his attacks on the reliability of the Bible. Since some atheists have slid into Jesus Mythicism, there was a hope that Ehrman would support them in that.
But that is not what Ehrman believes. Whatever else Ehrman is, he is too good of a historian to discount the historicity of Jesus. Ehrman eventually wrote a book, Did Jesus Exist?, to set the record straight.
